another one of those caricatures from reading the KILLER ANGELS.

Robert E. Lee assumed command of the Army of Northern Virginia following the call of the southern states to secede from the union and having refused an offer by the united states federal government to take command of the Army of the Potomac to suppress the rebellion for fear of going to war against his homeland of virginia and being a strong supporter of slavery. his reputation as a capable officer in the US army in the mexican war as well as his career in the army corps of engineers played some part in his previous victories against the union army and by the time leading to the battle of gettysburg lee hoped for a decisive victory in the north in hopes that the federal government would sue for peace.

Um...just so you know, Lee wasn't "a strong supporter of slavery". His view was actually sort of contradictory. He believed the institution of slavery to be quite evil, but hoped that its trials would serve to strengthen the African American race until their final emancipation.

but there is to consider that he did come from a prominant virginia family and owned many slaves in addition to being very critical of the abolitionist movement. plus the fact that aside from the 3rd grade american history notion/ Lost Cause ideology of lee joining the confederacy because despite his views of "slavery being evil" he didn't want to fight against his home state is somewhat debunked by these factors. a good book to look at in regards to this issue (and civil war hstory for that matter) is james mcPhearson's BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM.

in other news, glad you liked the pic!
